What Is Culture For?

  • People who express admiration for culture often say that it’s ‘valuable for its own sake’. The School of Life disagrees, taking the utilitarian view that culture is valuable because it addresses our need for education, guidance, consolation, perspective, encouragement and correction, like a firm-but-fair primary teacher. Presented in a beautifully produced, premium gift format with with full colour images, this is a fascinating exploration of how the arts relate to our daily lives, and how we can draw on cultural masterpieces to find the answers to our personal dilemmas.
