Ruth Ewan, May the People, 2013
To coincide with Memorialmania – her Observers’ Walk made in collaboration with Astrid Johnston – Ruth Ewan made three woodblock print editions. Centred around the history of political radicalism on Calton Hill, the prints are informed by the research undertaken for the project.
The first of these limited editions is May the People, which features text from a political reform protest banner carried to Chartist demonstrations. Chartism was a movement for political reform in Britain between 1838 and 1848. During Chartist conventions, approximately 5,000 people would gather on Calton Hill to listen to radical speakers.
