Collective Matter x KMAdotcom

Collective Matter x KMAdotcom
Launch date: Friday 6 November 2020

Collective Matter and KMAdotcom worked together to create
a new collection, celebrating the shared energy and commitment
to nurturing individual and collaborative creativity found within the
KMAdotcom artist studio.

Collective Matter creates space for considering new ways of working
for artists, and rethinking what a product collection could be. For
this long-term collaboration, Collective Matter spent time getting to
know the practices of the fourteen artists that make up KMAdotcom,
to create new products that are truly reflective of their lively studio
community.

KMAdotcom is an artist studio based in Mayfield, Midlothian
supported by Artlink Edinburgh. In this collaborative space, artists
produce artwork together inspired by their diverse interests and
practices. Their individuality is reflected through this unique product
collection for Collective Matter, the result of the group working
together and drawing inspiration from trips to Collective’s site and
regular studio visits.

Four 100% silk square scarves made in the UK. Watery washes
and vibrant colours form the background to these digitally-printed
wearable scarves. With making connections in mind, Gerald, Leanne
and Marc put together thoughtful sentiments, written in KMAdotcom’s
hand drawn font.

Brass Pendants of various sizes, cast in Scotland. Sculptural pendants
on a 20” gold chain. The charms have a hand-finished quality, achieved
by the ‘lost wax’ method of casting, with every charm carrying stories
in their miniature forms. Each of these tactile, wearable sculptures
is its own character and personality, conceived and made by
KMAdotcom artists Gavin and Lorna.

Three ceramic vessels, made with Scottish maker Manifesto. For
each of these works; a squirrel mug, bird bowl and owl jar, Manifesto
interpreted a series of textural, colourful felt tip drawings made by
Gavin into sculptural objects for the home. These once 2D characters,
selected from the many characters that inspire Gavin, some of which
can be spotted on Calton Hill, are given an identity and function in
ceramic forms.

Three ornamental creature keepsakes, available as a keyring. Each
of these animal decals depict drawings are framed by handmade
ceramics, and hold the characters that inspired the ceramic vessels
made with Manifesto.

A selection of souvenirs; including a set of digitally printed postcards
inspired by the collection, and a tea towel and magnet inspired by
KMAdotcom artist Alan’s layered, monochromatic drawings of the
National Monumnet, fondly known as Edinburgh’s disgrace.
