Sebastián Díaz Morales was born in 1975 in the Patagonian petroleum city of Comodoro Rivadavia, Argentina. With his book Ficcionario – the title is a portmanteau of the words diccionario and ficción – he presents a kind of autopoetic sum of his work in images, texts and reports by participants. Since completing his studies at Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam in 2001, the Argentinian film artist has been invited to exhibit at many eminent European and US institutions, and he has participated worldwide in major film and video festivals, as well as numerous biennials. He deliberately recalls – as the motto of one of the chapters of his book – a quote of the Argentinian writer Jorge Luis Borges: "The mind was dreaming. The world was its dream." This particular view of reality, a fusion of poetic and realistic narrative style, represents the Latin American literature of magical realism as well as the docu-fictional style of South American cinema. In Sebastián Díaz Morales, these influences come to bear when, in his film 'Pasajes', he has a man rush from room to room and, in doing so, join the most diverse worlds. His installation 'Insight' takes a further decisive step and raises the question: In front or behind the camera, is all this actually just an illusion.
